Accessorials are charges beyond the linehaul rate. The most common are detention (waiting beyond the free time at a facility), layover (a driver held overnight), and TONU (truck ordered, not used).
The rule that gets them paid: agree the terms on the rate confirmation, record in/out times with the facility, and notify the broker or customer as soon as detention starts — not after the driver leaves.
