Federally regulated carriers must use ELDs certified by an accredited third-party body.

Federally regulated commercial drivers must use an electronic logging device for their records of duty status from 12 June 2021. The device must comply with the hours-of-service regulations and the current ELD Technical Standard, and must be on Transport Canada's list of third-party-certified devices.

A progressive-enforcement period followed; most provinces and territories began issuing penalties on 1 January 2023, with some (including British Columbia and Quebec) later in 2023. Exemptions exist for specific sectors under section 16 of the Motor Vehicle Transport Act — check the current list before advising a carrier.
