Every entity under FMCSA jurisdiction must update its registration (MCS-150) every two years, even when nothing has changed; failure deactivates the USDOT number.

The last digit of the USDOT number sets the month (1 = January … 9 = September, 0 = October): the update is due by the last day of that month. The next-to-last digit sets the year: odd → odd-numbered years, even → even-numbered years. An update is also required before operations begin.

Failure to file deactivates the USDOT number and may bring civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day (maximum $10,000). Filing is free. Mileage and power-unit counts in the update feed safety measurement. Updates are made in FMCSA's Motus system.
