Companies that operate commercial vehicles hauling cargo or passengers in interstate commerce must register with FMCSA and have a USDOT number, which links the company to its safety record.

A USDOT number is required when a vehicle used in interstate commerce has a gross vehicle (or combination) weight rating or actual weight of 10,001 lb (4,536 kg) or more, is designed or used to carry more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation or more than 15 passengers, or carries hazardous materials in quantities that require a safety permit (49 CFR 385.403) — including intrastate. Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate carriers.

The number is the identifier for audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations and inspections. Since May 2026 registrations are created and updated in Motus, FMCSA's new registration system (Login.gov account required).
