Carriers must systematically inspect, repair and maintain their vehicles and keep records (49 CFR Part 396). Drivers complete vehicle inspection reports; safety defects must be repaired, and the repair certified, before the vehicle operates again. Each vehicle must pass a documented periodic (annual) inspection (49 CFR 396.17).
